Smallbird padded into camp with a large bundle of herbs between her spotted jaws. The small she-cat had been out collecting some well needed herbs all day and she had just returned. Smallbird walked over to her den and deposited the herbs for later sorting. She stretched out and lied down outside the mouth of her den.

"Smallbird!" A tom's voice sounded out at the medicine cat, and Pebblepaw appeared. "What'cha doing?" He inspected the herbs as if they were of interest to him, which they weren't, seeing as he was no medicine cat. But the poor apprentice was deathly bored. He had not a mentor yet--he'd bother Ravenstar about that issue later--and all the elders had their needs attended to already. Pebblepaw was a fast worker. "Can I do something for you? Please? There's nothing else to do."

Smallbird jumped slightly as Pebblepaw surprised her. She purred, "I'm not doing really anything at the moment." She watched as he looked at the herbs and he seemed rather bored with them. She flicked her tail and sat up, stretching as she did so. Smallbird pondered Pebblepaw's question, she really couldn't think of anything she could have him do at the moment since he was not her apprentice. "You could go check to see if the elders need anything and if not, then you could go check with the queens." The small spotted she-cat purred and waited for the young cat's reply.

"But I'm bored," the stubborn apprentice whined. "I wanna do something! I already asked the elders and the queens and everything and I already finished with their chore and the stuff they need. I even helped pick ticks out of their fur."
Pebblepaw grimaced at the foul memory of mouse bile and continued.
"Aren't there herbs we could collect or something?" He poked his head slightly in the medicine cat den, as if to confirm that they were low on stock. Not that he would know. He couldn't even tell the difference from deathberry and yew.

Smallbird got up and shook off dirt from her spotted pelt. "Hmm well we are a bit low on Burdock and Tansy, not to mention Alder. I suppose you can help with collecting some of the herbs." she said. She got up and began walking off to where the Burdock is most plentiful. She paused to see if the young cat would follow or not.

Pebblepaw happily agreed and scampered along the medicine cat. He parted his jaws. The scents were unfamiliar and rather...herby. He then encountered a slight problem.
"Which one is burdock? What is Tansy? What does Alder do?" he rudely blurted out loud, startling a school of fish and sending a water vole running for its dear life.

Smallbird chuckled, "Burdock are plants that have dark green leaves and they have a very prickly head that can get caught in your fur which can be overly annoying. Tansy has small, yellow flowers with a fern like appearance. But some say that if the leaves and flowers of this plant are consumed in large quantities, it can be poisonous." She paused to inspect a flowering plant then continued on her way, looking back to see if Pebblepaw had become bored and left her, "Alder has many purposes such as reducing swelling, preventing infection and helps if a cat has a toothache."

"Eew. Burdock and tansy sound bad. Why do we need them?" His head was almost being overwhelmed with this new information.
After Smallbird inspected the flower, Pebblepaw also pushed his nose in to see what was so interesting. A giant spider crawled out and he leaped back in surprise.
